Today we went to the Jones/Wilson reunion in Monterey, VA. I have never liked the trip- 4 mountains that always made me sick. This time I drove- which helps immensely and the trip didnt seem too bad. Very beautiful scenery and the kids were good. They were excited to see where Pappaw grew up and went to school. The reunion happened to be in the building where he went to school (yes, K-12) and my uncle Tom lives in the house where he spent most of his childhood and we were able to stop there. It brought back a lot of memories for me. On the way there, Mom went with us, and she told of the story when we slid down Jack mountain on the way home from Monterey one night. All I remember about it is that my brother and I were laying down (no carseats) in the back of our red stationwagon and my Mom told us to get down. That's all I remember. She said we would hit the bank on one side of the road and the snowbank on the other. I asked her what my Dad was saying and she said that all she remembers him saying was, "I have to keep the front of this car in the front." Wow. How scary is that? She said that when they got to the bottom of the mountain and used a pay phone to call Dad's parent's that they could hardly even stand up it was do icy. My grandmother got the salt trucks to come back to the mountain and my uncle Tom met them at the top of the mountain. Tom said, "I knew you would make it because Meg (Toms wife, my aunt) had the whole town praying for you!" So we spent another night in Monterey instead of attempting the next 3 mountains. That's a story for you, Jenny M.!
